Tree decorating ideas with a designer edge

Whenever I visit a holiday tree festival where top designers deck the halls (and trees), I come away feeling as dull as a bureaucrat from Buffalo.

I arrive to the affair feeling pretty confident in my holiday decorating skills. I know to layer on the white lights, stick with a unified color scheme and add seasonal bling in the right places. But I leave feeling decoratively deflated. My ideas fall flatter than gingerbread.

My visit to the 26th annual Festival of Trees, at the Orlando Museum of Art, proved no exception. Now I get that this is a modern art museum, so designers have creative license to do the unexpected. They did not disappoint.

But my holiday decorating bar just got higher. It used to be my goal (and I know this makes me sound ornamentally hollow) to have a Christmas tree that looked like a department store tree. However, the trees at this festival are to department store trees what department store trees are to Charlie Brown’s tree.

Paula has been out and about checking stores for Christmas ideas to use on her upcoming Christmas home tour, and decided to share some of these ideas with you.

The holiday season will soon be upon us. Some people are already preparing and have bought their gifts, and then there are the other people, including myself, who have not started their list and will soon have to make decisions on decor, sweets and gift-giving ideas.

My first stop was Casa Bella gifts in Wolfville, where every year they prepare their open house to greet the people coming from many areas including the Acadia craft fair. Automatically I follow the crowd for decor ideas and was not disappointed as they are one of my favourite tree- bookcase-decorated locations. The owner, Cathy, and her staff are always accommodating. They even do a gift-wrap service with the money going to charity.

Tree and home decor has come a long way from tinsel (of which, in our house, the cat used to eat) to glitz-and- glamour additions to make your home sparkle.
