When I first started to garden in the Seventies, flea markets, junk shops and latterly car-boot sales were awash with cheap, chic finds. The same can’t be said today, when even an old bucket can cost an arm and a leg, but the keen collector keeps ahead of the game, always on the lookout for new ideas, and this book will help the enthusiastic garden objet hunter to do just that.

Although the current trend for “vintage” or “retro” may seem too close for comfort for those who remember the first time around, a hint of times past can give a garden instant warmth and intimacy, and allows us all to create individual gardens, a hard act to achieve if sourcing goes no further than the local garden centre.

Modern building materials often look out of place in a garden. I always try to use the same bricks for paths that are used on the house, slate on tables to match my roof, and find that worn salvaged paving, tiles and edging are more sympathetic and occasionally cheaper than their modern equivalent. My builder was driven to distraction by my habit of foraging in his skips for hidden treasures.

Unsurprisingly, some of my happiest moments have been spent browsing builders’ yards (now mostly renamed architectural salvage emporia, with prices to match), because garden artefacts are now big business.
