Annual home tour offers fresh, new ideas for your holiday home

Visitors to Nancy Gowen’s home this holiday season will see red, and a lot of it.

Gowen and her husband, Dick, always decorate their Palo Verde Drive home, but have gone out of their way to the deck the halls with a little extra this year – all in anticipation of the Black Hills Symphony League Home Tour.

More than 1,000 people are expected to tour five local homes, where they can socialize, gather ideas for their own homes, or view items to purchase at a later auction.

“It’s a fun outing,” said Sherry Phelan, chairperson of the event. “Get a friend and go to this; it’s just fun.”

The event is hosted each year by the league to raise money for the Black Hills Symphony Orchestra and music education. This year marks the 30th anniversary and will also benefit Behavorial Management.

Some of the items in the homes will be taken to the Festival of Trees event later this month and auctioned off, Phelan said.

“It’s a wonderful way to support two events,” Phelan said.

Gowen said she has enjoyed the preparation, and has used Christmas red as her theme.

“It’s been fun,” she said.

The family keeps a 13-foot tree in one of the rooms that is decorated entirely in red and affectionately referred to as “Big Red.”
